Bits and Pieces AUCTION - APRIL 16, 1983 Phil Johnson has been working hard to coordinate an auction at the Blake Community House. We are fortunate to have Parks Williams as our auctioneer. It all starts on Saturday, April 16, 1983 at 10:00 a.m. with food and refreshments provided by Moore's Chapel United Methodist Women. Phil is still accepting items as donations or on consignment. It is requested that the items be delivered to the Community House on Friday, April 15, 1983 between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. (Richard Beardsley) A MEMORIAL TO JAMES MENDENHALLOur community and our church were greatly saddened by the death of Mr. James Mendenhall on Friday, March 18, 1983. Our prayers and our support are with the many members of his family who are active members of our Church family during this time of sorrow. Memorial contributions are now being received for the Moore's Chapel Building Fund in the memory of James Mendenhall. As of March 27, the contributions have totaled $ 870. (Richard Beardsley) ARE YOU SOFT-SOAPING GOD?Are you soft-soaping God? DUZ you DREFT along with the TIDE? VEL now is the time for ALL to CHEER up · If you want real JOY, the TREND is to BREEZE to church regularly on Sunday. But too many WOODBURY their heads in a pillow or work in their yards like HANDY ANDY, forgetting that the Lord's Day was made for LESTOIL. Where our Lord reigns, the DOVE of peace will never need to send out an S.O.S. Don't trust LUX and neglect worship on Sunday. Shall we DIAL you and remind you of those IVORY palaces up yonder? This is not just idle BABO. Worship will ADD to your LIFEBUOY. So why not be faithful and WISK yourself out of bed Sunday mornings, dress up like SPIC 'N SPAN, and DASH like a COMET to God's house of prayer. Singing praises to God will bring cleansing to your soul. PLEDGE yourself to do the right and PRIDE of conscience will be yours. Life will be full of ZEST. (Borrowed from Worcester UMC Newsletter, Worcester, New York) THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH AT WORK (1983) * The Advance Committee has authorized an asking of $69 million for mission projects as part of 1983-84 designated giving program (11% increase from last year) * From Kampuchea (Cambodia) missionaries Margaret & Dean Hancock report that the countryside is still littered with spent shell casings from the intense fighting. Today children gather the empty shell casings and take them to village foundries where they are melted down and made into bells to be placed on the harnesses of their oxen. Shells into bells - implements of war into implements of peace! * During the 15-year war in Angola almost every United Methodist church was destroyed. The scattered church grew anyway and has raised $31,000 for Africa Church Growth and Development * Native American churches are alive and well in Michigan. There are 10 Indian missions; each church holds two Sunday services, as well as midweek services and good attendance in Sunday School. |
