Youth Group Canoe and Kayak Trip

On August 13, 2003, 19 young people from our church explored the Brandywine River via Canoe and Kayak. Of the 19 explorers, 12 were young of age and the other 7 were young of heart.

Our trip began at the Brandywine River Museum on Route 1 and ended at Thompson's Bridge in Delaware. The weather was great. The water was warm. The river was quiet, except for one section. In this one section, one of our tandem kayaks (2 Methodist Youth Canoe Trip person) flipped for reasons unknown to anyone. A canoe, mastered by an experienced crew attempted to rescue the kayak survivors, but flipped itself. (Who's fault? We'll never tell!) A third kayak came in, attempted to paddle up the river to get to the original site, but failed. (Some paddlers need to work out a little more.) Finally, the  rescue team arrived at the original site. (We walked in the river. It was easy. How the boats flipped, we'll never know.) All personnel and equipment were saved. We continued our trip down river.

The river was great for swimming, floating, paddling and sunning. I believe the young of age spent more time out of the boats than in. We all had an excellent time. The stories from the trip are too numerous to tell in this short space. Join us next year and experience the trip first hand. We may also go "tubing".
