Celebrating 80 Years - S. Nivin Logan
November 16, 2003
Few of us were around to remember Ernest and Gladys Logan carrying baby
Nivin to Moore's Chapel in a basket. But there are those of us who now know him as the official greeter for all who come through the doors at our church.
Nurtured through the Sunday School, Nivin participated in Children's Day. On one occasion his brother, "Bunny," laughed at him when
he was reciting and he came
right down from the pulpit and over the altar rail to everyone's surprise. Yes, Nivin can sing and he did sing in the choir for a short time. But he decided, since he couldn't
read music and didn't want to practice every week, that wasn't something he wanted to continue. He enjoys the music of our choir and we can always count on his familiar
"AMEN" at the end.
Nivin has served faithfully in the past as trustee. Many, many years ago, after his Saturday night date, he would stop by the church to start the furnace so the church
would be warm on Sunday morning. For over 50 years Nivin was instrumental in helping with the United Methodist Men chicken barbecue. Nivin participated in the Christmas Candlelight services, too.
Remember the Valentine's Day fundraiser and the hat you sold more than once? Over the years, many ministers have lived in the parsonage and relied upon Nivin to answer their concerns and questions.
Many of us recall the time, Nivin, when you got too close to the corn picker and lost your arm. With our prayers and your optimistic attitude that didn't seem to stop you from doing whatever you wanted to do. Nivin is always first in line to help
no matter what needs to be done. He is an inspiration to us all.
We love you, Nivin, and all your friends here at Moore's Chapel wish you a very happy 80th
birthday.
As long as I live, I believe one of the greatest people I have met or ever will meet is Nivin Logan. Nivin is one of the most generous, giving, and caring people and has greatly shaped the life and ministry of Moore's Chapel over his
lifetime in very positive ways. When I look back over my eight years as pastor, I have come to know that if you need anything Nivin is right there for you. Whether it is helping in the church or community, attending funerals, weddings and
other services, moving tables and chairs for special church events, cutting grass, trimming shrubs, sharing a good laugh or meaningful conversation, or any other means of helping out, Nivin is there. Another thing that I have learned from
Nivin is his tremendous ability to laugh and be content with whatever comes his way. Whether it is church related or in other areas of daily life, Nivin has strongly displayed what the hymn writer wrote, "Whatever my lot, thou hast taught
me to say, 'It is well, it is well with my soul. '
It is nearly impossible for me to even begin to think of Moore's Chapel apart from Nivin Logan. Not only because of the lifetime of service to God, Moore's Chapel, and community, but because his love for all people rooted in the love he and
wife Evelyn have for Christ Jesus. Anyone who knows them can tell you Nivin and Evelyn simply radiate God's love to so many people. For the disciples in the Bible there was a very faithful man named Joseph whom they gave a great
nickname. The name they gave him was Barnabus meaning "Son of encouragement." In Nivin Logan, Moore's Chapel has its very own encouraging disciple. I know that I am forever a better person for knowing Nivin Logan, and Moore's
Chapel is forever a better church because of him.
