Early this afternoon while at my brothers house, there was a knock on the door. As my sister-in-law got up to answer the door, my brother and I kept on talking. I looked outside the open door and on the porch stood a middle aged man in a nice suit. The man was holding a Bible. Traci stepped onto the porch and closed the door behind her. After a few minutes, she opened the door and came back inside with a pamphlet in her hand from a local Methodist church. My brother asked her, "Who was that?" Traci replied, "A man trying to "recruit" people to go to his church." That statement got me thinking and I remembered something my dad had told me many years ago while fishing. "You're not gonna catch a fish if you don't cast your line into the water." At just that moment today, I realized the power of that single statement. God calls us to be "Fishers of Men". The fact is, we can't win souls for Christ if we don't "cast our lines" and present people with the opportunity to know Him. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." - Matthew 4:19 NIV So many of us see those "Door to door witnesses" as annoying and a waste of time. Those men and women that take the time to reach out to their communities and knock on the doors of total strangers, are servants of Christ and today, more than ever, I commend them. You are my witnesses," declares the Lord, "and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me. I, even I, am the Lord, and apart from me there is no savior. I have revealed and saved and proclaimed I, and not some foreign god among you. You are my witnesses," declares the Lord, "That I am God. Yes, and from ancient days I am He. No one can deliver out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?" - Isaiah 43:10-13 NIV As servants of Christ, it is important and imperative that we proclaim his name. You may not want to go knocking on doors on a Sunday afternoon but that's not the only way to reach out to your community. Taking opportunities as they arise day to day is just as effective as door knocking. Maybe even more effective. Take those opportunities and fulfill your calling as a Fisher of Men. Like my father said, "You not going to catch a fish if you don't cast your line into the water." Until next time, Serve as Jesus did and "cast your line" because you are a fisher of men!
