Moore's Chapel has always been known as a "singing
church". Since its founding, there has always been a Moore's Chapel
choir. According to historical records,
one of the men involved in the planning and construction of the church, from
1869 to the church's dedication in 1872, was Gabriel Senderling. He was
the first choir director and song leader. He also conducted a singing
school in the community. Although no bulletin survives for the Services of
Dedication on June 9, 1872, we can be reasonably sure that Mr. Senderling's
choir was singing on that day.
Homecoming has
and continues to be, a day of great celebration at Moore's Chapel. Under
the direction of Edgar Thompson in the 1940's, 1950's, and early 1960's, the
choir sang for each service. The choir continues to perform special
anthems for the Homecomings each October.
 The choir or choir members have always participated in the
church's Christmas programs. In 1951, the first annual Christmas
Candlelight Service was held and singers from the choir sang solos, duets,
and trios.
For a brief time in 1963 and 1964, Edith Moore directed the
choir. Then in the fall of 1964, Ruth Ann Johnson became choir
director. With the help of Dot Williams at the organ, the choir changed
from singing just hymns to singing anthems of choir music.
Since 1964, the choir has worked with the Worship Committee
in presenting the Christmas Candlelight Service. Cantatas are often
performed at Christmas and Easter, now accompanied by Chris Norman, who took
over as organist when Dot Williams retired in 1983.
The choir takes a break during the summer, but from September
to June, members sing their hearts out whether the song is a traditional
arrangement of "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" or the spirited spiritual,
"I'm Gonna Sing All the Way to Heaven"!
"Jesus Is Our Music" and we sing each Sunday at
10:30 AM. Rehearsals are Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9 PM. We always
